Film and Culture - What Japan, China and South Korea can achieve together -
The world of film has seen great technical innovation and is in an era of revolutionary change. In these times, can the filmmakers of Japan, China and South Korea join hands to present their work from the region? This session will examine the future of Asian film by discussing the role of film in culture, the cultural interactions it facilitates, and the way ethnic spirit and diversity can be expressed in film.

TAKANO Etsuko (Japan)
General Manager, Iwanami Hall
Born in the former Manchuria (present day northeast China), TAKANO Etsuko graduated from the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques (IDHEC) in Paris after a period of employment at Toho Company, Ltd. Upon returning to Japan, she became an assistant to director Kinugasa Teinosuke and also, directing and writing scripts for television drama. She became the General Manager of Iwanami Hall from its inception in 1968, establishing the "Equipe du Cinema" in 1974 to collect and screen famous films from around the world. An honorary director of the National Film Center from 1997 until August of 2007. She has also been president of the Japan-Portugal Society since 2006. She received the title of "Person of Cultural Merit" in 2004. |

XIE Jin (China)
Film Director
Studied at the National Academy of Drama at Jiang'an in Sichuan. Thereafter, also performed as a stage actor. XIE Jin became involved in the world of film from 1948 as an assistant director and his first directed film was "The Denunciation" in 1951. Film works such as "Stage Sisters" (1964), "Hibiscus Town" (1986) and "The Opium War" (1997) have received many film awards at local and international film festivals. He has been chairman of the judging panel for China film "Golden Rooster Awards" and a judging committee member at the Venice Film Festival and Tokyo International Film Festival. He is an affilliate professor at Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Director of School of Film and Television Technology at Shanghai University and Xie Jin Film and TV Art College at Shanghai Normal University. He has served as a chairman of the board of Xie Jin Film, TV & Technology Co., Ltd since 2000. |

KIM Dong-Ho (Republic of Korea)
Festival Director, Pusan International Film Festival
Kim Dong-ho majored in Law at Seoul National University, received his MA in Administration from Hanyang University, and served in various government posts at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (formerly known as the Ministry of Culture and Information) for 27 consecutive years including serving in the post of Vice Minister. Additionally, he served as the president of the Korean Motion Picture Promotion Corporation and the Seoul Arts Center. During his career, Kim Dong-ho has received awards and recognition for his efforts in the cultural development of South Korea as well as in the international community, including the City of Paris award in 2006 and the Golden Cinema Festival Special Award in 2007. Having served on the jury of many film festivals including the Rotterdam, India and Seattle International Film Festivals, he now serves as the Director of the Pusan International Film Festival and vice-chairman of the Network for Promotion of Asian Cinema. His recent book, "History of Korean Cinema Policy" (written by Kim Dong-ho et al) was published in 2005. |

AOKI Tamotsu (Japan)
Commissioner for Cultural Affairs, Japan
AOKI Tamotsu was a Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Cultural Policy at Osaka University, the University of Tokyo, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies and Waseda University before appointed to his current position in April 2007. He was invited as a visiting scholar at Harvard, a visiting professor at L'Ecole Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris and Konstanz University, Germany. He has carried out extensive field-research in Thailand, Sri Lanka and other Asian countries and Europe. He was awarded Suntory Academic Prize and Yoshino Sakuzo Prize and he is the Recipient of the Medal of Purple Ribbon of Japanese Government. His publications include "Symbolism of Ritual (Girei no shochousei)," "The Change of Discourse on Japanese Culture in Post-war Japan (Nihonbunnkaronn no henyou)," "Orientalism in Reflection (Gyakkou no orientarizum)," "Understanding other Cultures (Ibunnkarikai)" and many others. |
