Kyushu National Museum 10th Anniversary Special Exhibit
Sengoku Daimyo - Warlords' Rivalry in Kyushu over billowing Asian seas
Kazunori Araki, Principal Researcher, Kyushu National Museum
Who comes to mind when you hear "Sengoku Daimyo" (Warlords in the Warring State Period)? Is it Oda Nobunaga? Or Takeda Shingen? Uesugi Kenshin?
These are the most likely characters to make appearances in period plays, non-fiction stories, novels, comics, games, and other media.
This spring, the special exhibit at the Kyushu National Museum is titled "Sengoku Daimyo," but features the daimyo of Kyushu such as Ootomo Sourin, Mouri Motonari, Shimazu Yoshihisa, and Ryuzoji Takanobu. They may not be as well known nationally as Nobunaga, Shingen, and Kenshin, but they possess a certain charm unique to the Kyushu daimyos.
That characteristic is their passionate gaze for land overseas. In history classes, Japanese people always learn about the introduction of firearms in 1543 (some theories say 1542) and Christianity in 1549, but many do not recall that both events happened in Kyushu. The daimyos of Kyushu were the first in the country to adopt aspects of Western European culture, through their interaction with South East Asia and Europe, in addition to their relations with China, Korea, and Ryukyu.

Important Cultural Property
Lacquered sandalwood, pale-blue threaded armor with frightening ornaments
Ootomo family contribution (Yasuhara Shrine, Oita)
Exhibition Period: April 21 to May 17
This exhibit features the 50 year period between 1550 to 1600, during the dynamic intersection of the warring states and foreign exchange in Kyushu. We have collected portraits conveying the gallant figures of the daimyos, as well as swords and armor symbolizing the warrior, and newer weapons such as firearms and cannons. It is a great opportunity to see the items and materials left to this day by the daimyos. Detailed information on the exhibit pieces can be found on the Kyushu National Museum website, so please have a look. If there is a piece that interests you, there is no reason why you should not visit this special exhibit. I look forward to seeing you all there!
