Number of Cultural Properties Designated by Prefectural and Local Governments

Cultural properties are drawing ever-greater attention of citizens. Likewise, local governments must play ever-greater roles in preserving and utilizing local cultural properties. Many local governments establish ordinances to protect cultural properties, and designate cultural properties in their jurisdiction based on them. They manage, repair, or display these cultural properties by themselves, or provide subsidies to owners to manage, repair, or display their projects.
